The new chair of the Turner Bridge Club has written the following words to its members: The Turner Club is very sorry to have learnt of the recent passing of Les Cooper, who many will remember was the Club Chairman for some fourteen years, spanning the end of the last century and the beginning of this. Les contributed an enormous amount to the Club. He nurtured beginners and the less confident players by the Gentle Bridge that was played on Monday afternoons, often offering a lesson to illustrate a particular point to improve players’ game. It was he who initiated the Duplicate Bridge which we played on Tuesday afternoons – not online as at present, but actually face to face! And he very much enjoyed the battleground of the Thursday evening play, when we played Rubber Bridge for 1p per hundred points. Perhaps what many members will remember most fondly were the weekends away that he introduced, played at various establishments within an eighty mile radius of Lymington. From Friday night to late Sunday afternoon we could play bridge organized by Mr Bridge, which meant no dealing, no scoring, but lots of competition. And we would be well fed by the hotels, in Worthing, Cheltenham, and near Swindon, for example. It gave us all an opportunity to chat and socialize, complementing our Christmas parties and occasional summer soirees. Les gave so much to the Club; he was a warm and welcoming Chairman, and we send our condolences to Maggie, his wife and bridge partner.
